I am more likely to stop off at a service station and ask the attendant there, than I am to stop just anyone on the street. If I see a policeman parked somewhere (and I'm desperate) I might stop as well.
And that is about it.

i usually ask any tradesperson in the area, as i believe that most tradespeople work on projects all over the city so they know their way around pretty well.
