it'r our present lesson in our English class... first, d EXPOSITION --> d part that identifies the characters and clarifies the situation. COMPLICATION--> is the development of conflict arising from the situation. The highest point of the story in which the conflict is the most intense is called the CLIMAX. Following the climax is the RESOLUTION which refers to that part in which the conflicts may be resolved. The CONCLUSION gives the summation of the action or a hint of further development.
> Resolution and conclusion together are often reffered to as the DENOUMENT.

Well, I smell the strong whiff of homework someone wants us to do for him (or her?). So I don't feel guilty about taking a different approach.
I would argue that it is not possible to enumerate elements in other than a very limited, academic way, and not about some of the best works at all. Other than to say that it is fiction and it is short enough not to be referred to as a short novel or novella or novelette (however much those terms are still in vogue), what is there to say? It is short enough that you can afford to experiment with it, which is one of the reasons (aside from the obvious one of time) they are a staple of the undergrad English course.
A sufficiently short story can be a very creative piece of fiction that challenges every assumption offered by the course if it is very, very good. But too often people use the term "innovative" to mask mediocrity. You know you've seen it in music and painting, and you know it happens in "literature," too. Often the piece is only published because no royalties are paid and it fits the political agenda of the publication.
So a short story is what you make it. Make it good!

Short stories are different from novels in that one factor of the story is very well detailed and the other factors a left to the imagination.
For example, with Henry Lawson's Short Stories, which is a collection of stories, most set in the Australian bush, the main focus of the stories is the hardship of bush life. The setting takes the role that characters usually take in novels, and the characters are the backdrop. They are just used to explain the bush and are not described in great detail.
