One of the most famous field goals was by straight-ahead kicker Tom Dempsey of the New Orleans Saints in 1970. On November 8, 1970, Dempsey boomed a 63-yard attempt through the uprights to give the Saints a much-needed win over the Detroit Lions. Dempsey, however, was using a modified boot to compensate for his being born without toes on his right foot. Thus, while he was using the straight-ahead style, his special shoe gave him a larger contact area. Such a shoe has since been deemed illegal
