If you were to place 2 people in the same amount of sunlight, one with black skin and one with white, would the black skinned person get hotter quicker than the white person, due to the colour white reflecting light and black absorbing the light???

I would have thought that it would depend on their personal tolerance to heat. I have very white skin, but can't stand heat at all!

I don't think so. I think black people have a better tolerance for sunlight and heat. They originate in Africa in hot climate and their body has developed a strong resistance to sunlight and heat. White people originate in colder areas where the sunlight isn't as strong, so they aren't really "designed" to resist strong sun and heat.

So it's probably the opposite, the white person would have a hard time standing the heat faster than the black person.

And by the way, people aren't really black and white, but brown and pink, so the black and white light reflection thing doesn't really apply to this. :)

Good question, but i say no in the case of sunlight

1. Metabolism and body Fat plays a strong part in how quickly anyone (black or white) increases body heat from external influences.

2. Dark skin tends not to suffer as quickly from sunburn as it deflects or rather does not absorb the UV rays of the sun so quickly.

I've often wondered the same thing. But they originated in Africa, which I guess is pretty hot. So, I'd guess they've developed that type of skin as a way to adapt....maybe??
