I have read two science books where this has been stated. As far as I can remember one said 7 in your lifetime, while the other said 3 or 4 a year. I figured that they must get their statistics (they never stated) from doing filmed sleep experiments on test subjects (with a different aim to finding out how many spiders that they were going to swallow) and just noticed that some testees did actually do this, and extrapolated the figures to give the statistics. It would vary between countries, living conditions, temperature, etc.
Sorry that I can't give a definite yes or no, I only know what I read - they could be wrong (one is, or at least by degree).

When I was growing up, I lived in my parents basement and i would wake up at least once a week with a spider on my face and it would freak me out. I hate spiders now, I don't doubt that they could have been eaten, because you constantly subconsiously close your mouth and swallow in your sleep, so that kills the theory on the guy a few answers before mine. I am sure that it is possible, its not like it is dangerous though. Its just gross to think about.

Highly unlikely - the inside of most people's mouths are sensitive to touch, even in their sleep.
Spiders and such like do like dark places, (not normally the mouth!) but they don't like draughty ones! The mouth, via breathing, would most certainly be like being in a force 9 gale to a poor little spider. (Besides, he'd probably feel very sea sick with all that to-ing and fro-ing as you breathe!)
Also - to swallow anything must involve the item (or creepy crawlie!) passing down the back of the throat - which obviously will interfere with breathing. The moment your breathing is interefered with or interrupted you are immediately woken. You therefore would probably wake before you swallowed!!! (I hope!)
