The first night is usually the worst. Make sure you get proper sleep, disconnect the phone, use earplugs and don't think you can go on Yahoo Answers just for five minutes. Avoid high carbohydrate food when working. They tend to make you want to sleep. High protein foods to stay awake and when you do want to go to sleep a turkey sandwich with sunflowerseeds on brown bread with a glass of warm milk. Oh yes and keep your socks on when going to bed. Enjoy!

There's no side effects. I've worked nights (7p-7a, 7 nights on/7 nights off) for 4 years now. I stay on a night shift schedule during my week off. There are 24hr grocery stores and pharmacies. If you talk about a social life, parties don't get started until late anyway. I love staying awake at night and sleeping during the day. I would go crazy with the chaos of the world during the day. I love my peace and quiet. There are increased incidences of certain medical conditions that night shifters have, but as long as you stay healthy and take care of yourself, it's no different than anything else.

Stay as active as possible, both mentally and physically. Walk around if you can, talk with someone - anything to keep your mind operating. Don't tank up on sweets - you'll feel good for a while, but after the sugar rush fades, you'll feel worse than ever. Sleep as soon as you get home, and wake up about 8 hours later so that you will prepare your body for the next day. Hang in there - the first 24 hours is the hardest by far.

I've worked shifts for more than 25 years, and there are no quick fixes. My current shift pattern is days/time off/nights/time off etc., after days, during my time off I stay up later each night so that the night before I start night shift I am up until 4-5am, I am then better adjusted for night shift.
If you get up early in the morning the day you start night shift, then you will be spending almost 24 hrs awake, not good. If you fall asleep during work then you may get punished. If you feel tired take a break. Drink plenty of fluids. The worst night is the first, after that it gets easier as your body will adjust to the new pattern.
try not to sleep during night shift, I used to do that during breaks, but it was only making things worse, as the sleep period was not long enough. I now read books during breaks to keep my mind active. Try to get sufficient sleep after you finish your shift.

chocolate helps sometimes. My friend tought me some techniques like splashing cold water on your face time after time or keeping your feet in a bowl of cool water. put some music on that's an opposite to a lullaby. keep the window open definitely. it's good to chat with someone who's going through the same thing. not like all the time (then you won't manage to do the job) but exchange phrases once in an hour or so to keep each other alive. bright light would help too. green tea (althogh there is caffeine in it)

The best natural way is to be really excited about what you are working on.If this isn't happening drink more tea, less coffee and try to feel like a cinema hero who works all night long...it works!
