Yes, they definitely sound like hiccups... aren't they lovely?! My baby had them all the time while I was pregnant. Actually, I say lovely, but by the end she was getting them so regularly that it was almost as annoying as having them myself!

Hiccups have little to do with air, and a lot more to do with the diaphragm, which is the muscular wall that separated the chest and the abdomen. When you hiccup, the diaphragm is spasming, whether it's a baby or an adult. That being said, hiccups would be pretty tough to feel; my guess is that your baby is kicking or otherwise moving.

The baby actually does have hiccups. It is the lungs that do this. They are practicing to take there first breath once out of the womb. Don't worry it is completely normal. Look up this website.

Babies do hiccup. It's actually a muscular contraction of the diaphram which, when you are breathing air, affects your breathing.
Tell baby to think of oranges! (Yes, everyone thinks I'm crazy! Next time you have the hiccups, try it! My mother always used to tell us that and it works ... just don't ask how!)

Babies can hiccup in utero. They have amniotic fluid in their lungs at that stage, so they are "breathing".
