Try VSO, alternatively contact the British Council, google voluntary work, it shows loads of results. A lot will depend on your skills, are you specially qualified to teach, first aid, IT etc? Good luck, did a CELTA course my self and off to Thailand for voluntary work next May, good luck and well done, its cool to know that not everyone in this world is only out for themselves. Respect!

If you are until 26(or 30 'cause the rules will be changed this year) you can try the EVS (european voluntaru service) It's completly for free and you can spend 6 -12 months in whatever country, beeing as a volunteer for some organization, helping them 5 -6 hours per day. The EU pays everything, flight ticket, food, accomodation, language course, activities....You choose the country and the project.
if you want to know more......http://ec.europa.eu/youth/program/sos/index_en.html

You could have a look at www.idealist.org, it has paying and volunteer positions around the world. Lots of young people travel with missions organizations but judging from your handle I didn't peg you as a church goers but I guess I could be wrong.

Check out http://www.concordia-iye.org.uk/ they are one of the few charities that don't charge you thousands to volunteer! Also have a look at www.gapyear.com. Hope that helps.
