Be confident, strong and proffessional.
And rememeber, not to take any abuse personally, it will be difficult at first having to ask people for money, or have to threaten them with court action and stuff, but just keep telling yourself that you are doing your job.
You'll be fine and obviously very capable, as you wouldn't have been given the job in the first place.

Good Luck

This can be a tough job and very stressful if you work on commission. Did they provide any training? Most of the people you will be trying to collect on don't have the money to pay or they would of. That isn't to say it is a rule but just a general. See if you can set up a payment plan that they can handle. They may of just gotten a job and may not make much yet. Some may not be working at all. Just take your time, listen to other collectors around you and see what suggestions they make.

I agree with all the previous answers - this is a very stressful job.

Your company needs to train you completely and properly. If you feel they are placing you inadequately prepared, you may want to reconsider the position. Definitely have a good support system in your supervisor.

Also discuss your goals clearly with your supervisor. Are you working on a quota system? What are the company expectations? Is there a bonus system tied into collections?

And definitely make no financial committments of your own based on this new job. Save as much of your paycheck as you can. Reevaluate things in 3 months and see if this job is helping you reach your professional goals.
Good luck...

stay calm!!! I'm not trying to be mean... but you will be seen as the devil and will have to deal with angry people who cannot pay or who are sick of being harrassed! I worked at a collection agency and had to deal with the stress of hardly anyone picking up the call or swearing at me... in some cases people cried. Be prepared for some stress but if you don't take anything personally, you'll do fine. Positive attitude!
