Half my class don't know the alphabet and can't add one and one. I have never encountered such divots. A couple of kids get help a few lessons a week but it is not enough. Any suggestions on what to do as they need extra extra help and I have very little time to plan for their needs and would appreciate any advice from experienced teachers.

Get the parents involved. Explain the problem, and the ramifications of same, and get them to take responsibility for their kids as much as you.

Unless tyhe parents turn out to be divots too ... then just give up.

thats not surprising, my friend who is a Year 4 Teacher in a state school has a class of 30 with most of them on National Curriculum Level 1's and 2's.

Well practically speaking you will not be able to teach them anything approaching the work Year 2 do until you have covered the basics. So you would need to determine what stage they are at and then come up with a plan (With the Head involved) to get them up to Year 2 standards as quickly as possible.

I think you should speak to the principal of the school and work something out with him. Your lesson plan can include revision every morning to refresh their memory.
