It is more likely for an invertabrate to exist, such as the daddy long-legs (no quote marks are necessary), than vertabrates because they are perfect for what they are designed to do, and do not require any fine-tuning, which is what evolution is all about. They are unlikely to get any bigger however, the legs of such a creature will not be able to stand it.

Every baby long leg has to have a daddy. Has anyone explained the birds and the bees to you yet?

Same as everyone else says. Why do we exist? Why does any creature exist? No-one knows the true meaning of life and I doubt we ever will. I do know that everything serves a purpose in this amazing world.

Because one day a lady long legs met a man long legs and they decided to get friendly; very friendly.
She laid some eggs, et voila, he became a Daddy Long Legs.
Simple really.

Do you mean as a term, in which case I have no idea, it's an awful name - it should be crane fly. If you mean why do they, as an insect, exist, well that is to accompany me in the bath or shower. For some reason they just love it, leave the window open a crack and in they shoot and straight into the water with me.

I don't know. It's weird, they probably should have died out years ago having no purpose at all. They don't eat anything as full grown flys, and they kill plants as larvae, so presumably they exist as a source of food for birds, and to freak the hell out of my husband.
