Chances are it's painful because it's still fairly dry and tough. The more it absorbs, the softer it becomes. If you have the time, take a bath and sit in the tub with your legs spread and you pelvis tipped slightly up to get some water inside your vagina. Otherwise if you have an empty shampoo bottle or squirt bottle, you sit on the toilet and squeeze that to get some more moisture up there. If neither of those work, you're going to just have to bear it and pull it out. Good luck.

You might need to go to the docs/a nurse in the end if you can't get it out (save you asking a question later) It's not that it's a big deal, it's just that they can do it for you if you really can't do it yourself.
Try lying down in bed and relaxing, then trying it. I know it will be hard to relax but it's like when a ring is stuck on your finger too tight. You think it's going to cut off your circulation or something and the more you panic and be harsh the more your finger swells making it difficult to remove.
But don't worry nothing bad is going to happen, just take your time and you'll get it.
Try squatting like you're on the toilet (maybe even over a toilet) and use your muscles to try and push it out, like you're peeing or something. At the very least this will surely move it down a bit so you can grab hold of it.
What about the string? Is it visible? That is a bit odd. If it's not actually "lost" but just painful i'm afraid you're just going to need to pull it out slowly, or try going in the bath and getting it to soak up water. You can't leave them in for too long otherwise you risk infection, but like I said don't worry about that, just don't leave it in for a few more hours.

These are all good suggestions. Also, while you're inserting your finger and searching for the string, try to bear down. This will ironically relax your pelvic muscles.
Good luck!

RELAX!!!!! How long have you had it in? Sometimes if you have only had it in for a short while it is uncomfortable when removing, when it has done its job and is wet it's easier to remove. It's better to try them on one of your heavier days.Read the info that comes with it to see have long to leave it inserted.Try not to worry, it'll only be more uncomfortable then.It will come out! You could try having a warm bath and relaxing and try to take it out in the bath!

If you really can't get it out you need to see a doctor. Retained tampons can cause toxic shock syndrome, which is quite dangerous.
Good luck.

start of with a warm bath- soak for a bit and relax- your muscles, don't panic- it makes you tense.
then slide your finger in to your vagina, to feel for the tampon/ string and pull.
if you are unsuccessful don't panic- its OK, you might need assistance, call your Dr.
