Marine plywood is made to a higher specification than standard ply and is more expensive as a result. The main difference is that the glue used for marine ply is fully water resistant; whereas that used in standard ply is not - water will cause it to de-laminate. There are other grades of plywood to (e.g. External plywood) that are water resistant and these are mainly used for buildings. The application of plywood is really dependant upon the wood used in its construction as this affects the quality of finish and what processes it can be used for. One of the main characteristics of plywood is that it lightweight but very strong compared to solid timber, it can also be bent and formed into specific shapes.

Marine plywood is a higher grade of plywood. The wood used in it is usually better, and the glue is waterproof, so the plywood does not delaminate as easily. Even though the glue is waterproof, the wood is not so it should not be left submerged or in conditions that you would not leave solid lumber in because the wood itself can still be damaged.
