Actually... This is an essay question. I personally blame it on Juliet's father and the role of fate but then it seems that other people have different ideas. Both Zeffierelli and Lurhmann versions do not provide a clear cut answer~

everyone in the play is directly or indirectly responsible. if you left out any one character they would live happily ever after. but they had really crappy friends and family.

you could no longer say Romeo and Juliet are accountable. The feud and, somewhat, Capulet's blind aggression (see Act 4) are what reason their deaths - that is stupid to assert that is their own fault. the factor of this play is that Romeo and Juliet can not be to blame for his or her own lives.
