A well-rounded man is a man who knows a little about everything --- an expert is a man who knows more and more about less and less until he knows everything about nothing!

A well-rounded man knows something about several different things. An expert knows a lot about one specific thing.

A well rounded person is aquainted with many of the Arts and Sciences, and can converse easily about Philosophy, Literature, and History, as easily as he or she can about Physics, Management Theory, and World Affairs.

Most experts, on the other hand, tend to know a great deal about a narrow field, and can discuss profound issues in that field, but tend to be unaware (or at least ill-informed) about activities beyond their narrow range of interests. In short, the difference is between a person who is a mile wide and an inch deep, or being an inch wide and a mile deep.
