My employee got a DUI about a year and a half ago. I want to send this person out of town to a convention and have them rent a car after arriving, but it's my understanding that car rental firms can and will refuse to rent to people with DUIs. I don't want to be in a position where I pay for the airline ticket, only to have this person stuck at the airport Does anybody have any information or first hand stories about this? How long does this stain last?

I hate to do this but it really depends on the car rental place. If they are connected to the national database and have a drivers license check system. Then he will not be able to rent a car. If they are not connected to the national data base and he does not tell them, then they have no way of knowing if he has a D.U.I. or not. Another thing. If he got the D.U.I. in California, they usually will not put any drivers infractions in the national data base. At least they didn't a couple of years ago. So it really depends on the comp[any you go withs computer hookups and capabilities.

I should know I was a manager at a very large car rental company in Tampa Airport for years.

I personally had a DUI in Canada around 1975. I since have never even thought much about it. I have rented cars in the US, Canada, England, Mexico and NEVER had a problem. I have rented from Hertz, Avis, Tilden, Economy, Alamo, Budget and maybe others. Perhaps it is only because it is so long ago.

There must be ways to check, perhaps by contacting the local agents of the rental company you wish to use.

No, your employee will not be able to rent a car with the DUI on his/her record. How long the stain lasts depends on your states driving laws.

Most car rental companies don't check your driving record, but if your employee got a DUI almost 2 years ago it's staying on record because that's a permanent thing and I wouldnt trust him with the company paying for a rental because that's a liability what would happen if he got caught with another DUI while on the trip your company would be held liable and that will cost you buisness a lot of money. DUI's are permanent once on record. If they ask if you've been convicted of a DUI and the only time you answer is if it's required, but most of the time questions from them are optional.
