I'm giving a 17-year-old Kurdish asylum seeker 4 hours' English tuition per week. He can express himself a little, but I could really use some ideas, games, exercises etc to really maximise his language skills, as he will be starting a college course in 6 weeks' time and I want him to get the most out of it!

As the English the student needs is to help him with every day life use what you can find around you eg
The Sun newspaper is supposed to have a reading age of 9. It has funny short pieces, proper articles, sports, cartoons etc.
A walk through the local High Street to read signs and watch people.
A trip to the library.
A discussion on TV programmes.
Take a current song from the Top twenty and see the patterns in it and try to add another verse.
I-Spy.

A great game that I bought in the states is called Zobmondo. It's all about choices and uses the conditional, as each scenario is make-believe.

I really brings people out of their shells, but you need to be selective in your questioning as some are not really appropriate for everyone.

I play the game at home with my family using the board, but also take the cards on long car trips.

I either take the cards to teach, or make a list of the questions that would be appropriate for each individual student.

An example:

Would you rather:

a. swim 500 feet in a three-piece suit, or
b. run 500 feet in a suit of armor

And you MUST pick one and explain your reason.

It's alot of fun.

If you need other suggestions, contact me by email.

So..
For a simple, step-by-step program that can help your child learn to read visit this site: http://readingprogram.toptips.org

Learning to read at a young age is important for the development of the child. It helps them develop a better understand of their surroundings, allows them to gather information from printed materials, and provides them with a wonderful source of entertainment when they read stories and rhymes. Children develop at different rates, and some children will develop reading skills quicker than other children; however, what's important is that as the parent, you are keenly aware of your child's maturity and reading level to provide them with appropriate books and activities to help them improve.

As parents, you are the most important teacher for your children.

This worked for me. Put a sign up locally for people in similar situation to meet in a coffee shop or pub locally and practise English. It's cheap and as long as everyone makes the effort to speak English it works really well.
