I have tried using a female USB to RJ45 adaptor, but the modem does not light up. Can a USB modem be powered through the RJ45 port? Is the only alternative a modem with an ethernet connection and how are these powered?Thanks in advance to anyone who can advise me.

Sorry you can't connect the two. As you suspect, you do need an ethernet modem. The ethernet modem will be powerd by an external plug pack similar to your wireless router.

The only way is two 6" nails, and a big hammer, cant be done

You need the right connectors for sure. Get advice from the place where you got your equipment.
