you have to ask the owner to disable the firewall on the modem they are using. make sure as well that there wireless channel is set to 10 and there should be no EMI's or chordless/wireless phones because it can block the signal. the wireless signal would be transmitted 50 to 60 meters from the modem..

Try moving around. The signal strength may be different in different places.

Can you either (a) try another coffee bar / whatever & see if the signal is OK; or (b) re-install your Wi-Fi adapter software.
Hopefully there is something amiss with the location rather than your Wi-Fi.

dont panic, the operator who runs the wifi, has to pay for everyunit that use use, therfore, he has probably limited the bandwidth in the cafe, therfore making sure he can avertise that he has it, but being mean with his output, welcome to starbucks.

it depends how far from the modem you are on the signal
i you get closer to the modem the better signal you will get
