yup. In Malaysia we have the franchise from the original Idol Series, naturally called Malaysian Idol. But this year's idol has been postponed to next year, to make way for another similar singing contest, called One In A Million, where winner gets away with a million ringgit.

we also have the more popular Akademi Fantasia, also a singing contest, adapted from a mexican singing contest of the same nature, where the daily updates of the contestants are shown twice a day, making it more of a popularity contest than a singing one. Votes are also cast via text messaging.

Apart from that, we've got quite a number of other singing contests that are similar to the idols show in the voting method, but with different concepts, like Bintang RTM, Celebriteens, Mentor etc etc. My personal fave is Mentor, where each contestant gets to pair up with an already famous local singer, throughout the contest, where the singer or mentor guides the contestant or protege to 1st place.

Yes, in fact there is. I am from the Philippines and people around here like to see "reality shows". Although the Filipinos know little about the definition of "reality show", they still spend their time watching programs that show the true attitude of a person. And since the American Idol is a big hit in the United States, they are pulling all strings to create a show very, very similar to the American Idol. It's called "Philippine Idol" and auditions are being made as of this answer. The tv network who will produce it has been showing teasers from as early as last year.
