AS far as I am aware age is not the de-limiting factor when it comes to using face-packs.
However - your skin-type (as has been mentioned) needs to be considered. Broadly speaking most people fall into one of 4 categories - having:
Normal/Combination skin - which generaly has a even skin tone; average pores size; maybe some T-zone oiliness; maybe occasional spots/break outs.
Dry/Mature skin - which may have lost some elasticity; be dry in places; may look a bit dull (lost it healthy glow) and may have some surface small veins
Oily/Problem skin - generally has an oily sheen; maybe suffers quite frequent spots and outbreaks; may suffer clogged pores, reulting in blackheads; may be prone to redness
Sensitive skin - Easily irritated/feel itchy/hot; can look blotchy; may have some flakiness' reacts to things quite easily - minor to major allergic reaction; suffers from redness/flushing, and may have surface small veins.
It is important to choose a mask that suits your skin type - because some masks really draw out the oils and moisture from your skin - great for oiliness but obviously bad for dry skins!
Masks are great to remove impurities and, in fact - the best masks employ fine mineral clays (not really mud - obviously the mud that is usually reffered to is actually 'clay'). The result is that by choosing the correct clay based mask can really rejuvenate, tone and cleanse your skin deeply.
You should not really employ a mask more than about once a week on sensitive skins, and dry/mature skins. Normal to oily skins you might use a mask twice a week. But for really badly blemished skin - you might even uses a 'face mask' detox program - usinga mask every day for a week - to really draw out the impurities - then a secind week every other day - following with a routine mask onece or wicw a week (you should see immense improvements).
Masks should not be left on too long - after the application and drying period - especially for drier and sensitive skins.
The best products we have come across are made with superb mineral clays combined with organic essential oils and organic plant derivatives to soothe, calm, and generally treat the skin as appropriate.
Each mask uses a different clay - according the the level of absorbency and detoxification required:
Natural pink clay is good for normal/combination skin for example;
white clay - is gentle on older/drier skins;
green clay which is highly absorbent is great for oily skins;
and an iron oxide rich red clay is perfect for sensitive skin.
You can find more information and total ingredients details (explaining why each ingredient is used) in the product section on this informative site: http://www.saferalternative.com
The mineral clay powders are great - and you get upto 40 applications in one 'jar'.
