Perhaps you want to know about words, not peoples?
Languages change, and when new things are discovered, people must name them. There are many ways for the names to be created. In English, these can be:
coinage (neologism): we coin, or create, a new word.
borrowing: We borrow a word from another language
compounding: we mix a few words together
clipping: we use only a part, a clipped, old word.
prefixation: we add something to the start of a word
suffixation: we add something to the end of a word.
The last, suffixation, is how we created Indian and American, from India and America.
These are the easiest ways to explain, but there are more ways to add words to the language, or to change old ones into new ones. Good luck learning them.

Because Some white guy got lost(legend says christopher columbus) and thought he found a trade route to India(real indians), when he actually discovered a completely different race of people who were living out there own lives...he called them indians because he was too lazy to bother calling them by their tribe or nation names. since the western world is lazy, they followed suits. Recently many Native Americans have actually embraced the term calling themselves "American Indians"

Theyre Ethnicities. A lot of people call them Race, but that's way different...there are three basic races in the world Caucasians, Africans, and Asians. All Ethnicities originate from those three races.

If the country is not ethnically homogenous, like America, then it's nationality. Otherwise, it could also mean ethnicity.
