There are many gay men who are not in the least bit effeminate.
People also change as they get older....
I knew a little boy who used to pray he would wake up and be a girl.
Until he was in his early 20s, he went out in drag frequently and was saving money for a sex change.
All that got pushed aside due to other circumstances. Now, this guy is in his late 40s and looks and sounds like a longshoreman... and is very happy to be a man... in the sack, he is still a total bottom.
So don't place so much emphasis on how you act... be who you are, the way you are.
Times change and people do too.
Who knows, maybe when your 60 you'll be really nelly!

I think it can be, not so much that people assume you're straight (I actually like that, I'm far less likely to be defined by my sexuality that way), but that out in the gay community you don't really "fit in" all that well, or that if you're straight demeanor is your personality in general, then you feel as if you're completely out of place, and now you might not fit in with much of anybody! We're a rare breed, and I can say that you'll reach a point where it's not that big of a deal. There's certain to be things in your life or parts of who you are that are more important than what gender turns you on. If you think people need to know, tell them! Otherwise, it's not an issue, and not really their business anyways.

I know EXACTLY what you're talking about man. I act the way I act... it's just the way I am. But apparantly, it's pretty "straight-acting", and I find that often gay guys don't realize I'm gay... so it's hard to meet guys. I work in theatre for Pete's sake, there are TONS of homos here, but I hardly ever get a chance to get to know them because they think I'm straight. But I refuse to be fake and act more fem or catty, so I'm in kind of a conundrum.
I don't think this really answered your question, but at least you know there is someone who can realte.

There are other ways to let people know that you are gay without acting like a "queen." Be yourself! Be friendly and nice. Smile at the next guy who shows interest in you. Don't resort to tired stereotypes of how "gay" should be or act.

The only problem in being too straight is that you are making it obvious to yourself and others that you act too straight b/c you feel like you have to prove it. And that only means that you are aware of the gay feelings you want to experiment with.
BE YOURSELF!!! No matter if it's gay or straight. You won't be happy until you do.
"WE LIE THE LOUDEST WHEN WE LIE TO OURSELVES!"
What good are you doing yourself trying to be someone your not?
If it's b/c your afraid of what people will think of you or that people will change how they feel about you, remember this...If they can change how they feel b/c you want to be yourself, you don't need them anyway! They were being fake all along. The people that truely love you will love you no matter what!

Sort of. When people don't know you are gay, you may have women hitting on you, assuming you're available. It's happened to me many times. It's embarrassing for both yourself and the women.

You could use a wristband or necklace with a rainbow to give a hint about your preference.
You don't have to change the way you act.
