Partly it will be caused by blood from damaged capillaries leaking into the area where you where hit (this also causes the "bruise" colour later).

Partly it will be caused by white blood cells being sent to the area of damage to combat any infection that may set in (especially if the skin is broken).

The rest is tissue fluid and repair cells entering the site to plug the broken capillaries and repair any tissue damage.

The swelling is caused by fluid beneath the skin building up - as the skin layer on your nose is quite thin, the fluid creates a raised bump against the bone or cartilage.

When you suffer blunt inpact to any part of the body it results in damage to the capillaries. Blood and other fluid is then released to the area of impact thus causing the bump.

stick with paddy. he seems to sound very clued up. I would have said the cartlidge you damaged gets replaced and if it's hard thats what it will be, but not sure sorry!
