Human nature! We are always not contended with what we have, especially when we start comparing! It then makes us unhappy and demotivated. Or it could be a postive thing, motivating us to want to do and achieve more. And if greed creeps in, we will think of all ways to achieve the desired results and maybe landed in trouble. Best way to live is to be satisfied what we have (knowing that if we compare, there's no end to it and can make us happy/sad).
"If you compare yourself with others, you may become vain or bitter, for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself. Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans. Keep interested in your own career, however humble; it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time... With all its sham, drudgery, and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world. Be cheerful. Strive to be happy"

Because we're constantly being bombarded with the fact that there's something "Always Better" out there now compared to previous generations. Our technology prohibits us from staying on top of the latest and greatest in the material world making us always "wanting more" and being unsatisfied that we are never good enough. The way reality television has infiltrated our lives and culture and how closesly we monitor the rich and famous only feeds our dissatisfaction with our own lives.

Well maybe because they are experiencing a quarterly crisis (which is in the age of 20's or up) or mid crisis (ages 40 up). This is very normal because at some point in our life we do not know where we are going but in time we will soon figure out what to do about it.

As the child story about the goats goes, it's human nature to view life as if the grass was greener on the other side of the fence.
They are not pleased with what they got and want more.
Damn greedy bastards....

Because its human nature, u see if our ancient humans would satisfied with their life in the jungles wearing leafs and eating raw meat than how we reach to our present life. they were not satisfied with whatever they have that time and they were always in search of better to best. dissatisfaction encourages man for search and search is responsible for modernity in the world. if u reach to ur goal u can get satisfaction for sometime but after that u want to achieve another goal and than another and another and that gives us reasons to live and that is life and we have to live......

Because they are not with who they want to be with or doing what they want to do. As a society we fall into societal traps and doing things because that's whats expected.
I say love who you are in love with. I say work at a job you love going to each day.
If things are working figure out why and solve the problem. Life is too short not to be happy each day.
If you are clincally depressed you should seek counseling and possibly medication -- so you can get back to LOVING LIFE>

Because of greeds and desires. Human beings always want a little more of those. Even people who pray for things, which gets out of hands sometimes.

Because they expect too much out of life. And most of the time they don't even work for what they want. And other times they just want attention and want other people to feel sorry for them.

Cause it is the nature of all living things to move forward.
to procreate
to live
mankind is constanly looking to beter themselves make life longer and more pleasant .. " creature comforts included"
there are some that will say only relkigion can save man thatbeing humble " unto a god or diety" will bring them jpoy and peace
other argue that mankind must toss of the "shackels" of a god type and strive for all they can be " monery and other wise"
in the end i think the reason man kind does this is to make up for lack of direction.
the dayman mankind discovered his imoratl;ity he grew up cosmiclay and neded to explain away a end.
many people use restless persute of success or the downward spiral of failure to i\gnore that none of it matters in the end.
to deal with life you need peace and peace come from coming to terms with life in all fotrms .
that cant be found in god or money
only in self
