They are hard to avoid but writing in a journal can help reduce stress immensely. This means that if she is consciously dealing with stuff then it is far less likely to intrude on the subconscious and come through as a bad dream.

Praying is the best solution. There are also CDs out there that can help -- some with pleasant sounds that are known to shift dreams, others with subliminal learning, and others with random "white noise" to subdue certain parts of the brain while you sleep.
Simple music or TV can at least change the dreams as well. There are drugs out there that will stop REM sleep and as a partial result also stop dreams, but that is extreme.
Still, prayer is the best answer.

There is a psychic by the name of Sylvia Browne that has written many novels, at least one about nightmares and such. See if you can find one of her books on dreams. Frm what I have read she suggests to ask for God to surround you with the light of the holy spirit and give you only good dreams. I would check on this. It sounds crazy, but it may work for her. (She is on Montel Williams show on Wednesday mornings).

dreaming is a crucial part of the restorative powers of sleep... the nightmares are probably from the stress in her life... fix that first, not the dreams...
