As a guy who had a long relationship with a much younger person I suppose I could answer a bit more informed than Mr. Freud:

Basically some girls just can't make out with same age guys because they're usually immature (girls mature much earlier than us twits). Immaturity also at times shows through as silliness/stupidity and girls often look for the opposite (i.e. seriousness/inteligence which an older guy tends to show)
Security as most ppl here mentioned is also a key factor. A girl whether conciously or not looks for security in her relationship. An older man obviously offers more security in both behaviour and perhaps more so in money/possesions/career.
Also a girl prefers a guy with experience when it comes to relationships and sex, a same-age-guy would normally be experimenting and learning at his girl's expense while an older man has been there and has done that, so that is also a major factor.
Next is attention, an older guy is surely to have lost some loves along the way and therefore he would be putting more effort into this one having learnt from past mistakes. Also an older man appreciates his younger mate, feels damn lucky to have her and therefore treasures; to a same-age-guy she's just another girl. Obviously girls just love this 'special' treatment.

The most important thing here is that some girls don't specifically look for older man but chance to come across one at some time in their life. The problem is this tends to be addictive (and talking from pers. experience here) in that once a girl dates an older man, same-age-guys would suddenly look and feel just-not-right anymore and she would tend to look for older mature guys throughout most of her life...that is until she herself has grown enough that man her age are now mature enough for her likings.
