log_5 x - log_5 (x+6) = 3

Take powers of 5:
x / (x + 6) = 3
x = 3 (x + 6)
x = 3x + 18
2x = -18
x = -9

2 log_4 3 + log_4 2x = log_4 (3x + 1)

Take powers of 4:
4^2 * 3 * (2 x) = 3x + 1
96 x = 3 x + 1
93 x = 1
x = 1/93

log_5 x - log_5(x+6) = log_5(x/x+6) = 3
x/x+6 = 5^3 = 125
x = 125x + 750
750 = -124x
x = -6.048 << now i'm confused...

----

2log_4 3 + log_4 2x = log_4 3^2 + log_4 2x
= log_4 9 + log_4 2x
= log_4 18x = log_4(3x+1)
18x = 3x + 1
15x = 1
x = 1/15

Jeff, here's the issue with the negative result:

Your negative result suggests that the first problem has no solution. Analysis of the original statement of the problem leads to a contradiction:

x must be positive, because negative numbers do not have logs. That means x + 6 must be larger than x, and log of x + 6 must be larger than log x. The difference thus cannot be positive 3, or any positive value.

DutchProf is such a card. He means well, but his math skills are so marginal that he produces only hilarious results.

log_5 x - log_5 (x+6) = 3
convert this equation to using only one log(use the quotient property):

log_5 x/(x+6)=3

convert this to the exponential form:

5e3=x/(x+6) e means exponent
(x+6)5e3=x multiply both sides with (x+6)
125x+6*125=x
125x-x=-6*125
124x=-750
x=(-750/124) be the one to put this fraction in its lowest term

2log_4 3 + log_4 2x=log_4(3x+1)
log_4 (3e2)(2x)=log_4(3x+1)
(3e2)(2x)=(3x+1)
9*2x=3x+1
18x=3x+1
18x-3x=1
15x=1
x=1/15

that's my answer..

sure i could have self belief it. it is how you may bypass approximately simplifying this equation. 5(-3x-2)-(x-3)= -4(4x+5)+a million (-15x-10)-x+3= (-16x-20)+a million -15x-10-x+3= -16x-20+a million -15x-x+16x= -20-3+a million+10 -16x+16x= -23+11 0 =/= -12 Yep, useful that it is -12 (neg. twelve) . a million) Multiply 5 by using each little thing in the parentheses. circulate around the (=) sign and multiply -4 by using each little thing in that parentheses. 2) sparkling the parentheses 3) it is the equation without () 4) team like numbers and indications (x's with x's) (numbers w/ #) 5) Simplify answer 0 isn't equivalent to a -12
