So the new President is elected in November 2006 ?

The new guy sits around in the waiting room until 2008?

I am used to our syestem I guess ?

The PM serves a term up to 5 yrs but gets to call the election any time he wants to (as long as it is before the 5 years is up) and then "Elections Canada" takes over the process the campaign can not exceed X number of days and no one is allowed to campaign X number of days (I think 1 or 2 ) just prior to the vote.

The vote is counted and that is the new guy is in within a week or two. Goes to the Governor General tells her (or him) he intends to form the government they do some paper work the new PM names a cabinet they are sworn in - thats that .

So it seems odd and confuseing to me that you hold an election now.

What does the new guy do for two years? I can't believe I've lived beside you guys my whole life and in the US for 4 years and not noticed this oddity -

No we are not holding elections for 2008, we are holding elections for 2006 and whoever is elected will take office in Janurary 2007. We are NOT voting for president. Bush has 2 years left to his term.

We are voting for House represenitives and Senators and in some areas local leaders.

We have elections every year. Some are local and some are country wide. The way our system is set up not all leaders and lawmakers who are elected are re-elected at the same time.

Presidents serve for 4 years. After the first 4 years they can be re-elected to another 4 year term. Then that is it. 8 years is the most a president can be in office.

The election in November 2006 is not for the President. The presidential election is in November 2008.

This coming election is for all 435 members of the House of Representatives, and 33 Senators (along with various state offices).

NO We hold them every 4 years in November and the new President starts immediately two months later in January. Next presidential election is 2008. We hold elections for other offices and laws every November. This November we are voting for certain Senators and Representatives etc.

The presidential election is not this year, its in 2008.

The elections this year are for the congressional seats and whether the Democrats or the Republicans will control Congress for Bush's remaining two years in office.

No, I am afraid you have our system mistaken. There are three national elections that happen in a predictable manner. First, every two years we elect in 1/3 of our senate. Second, every six years we elect in new Represenatives to the House. Third, every four years we elect a new President.
