I believe that it is because we do not teach our children to actually think. It is fine to learn the solutions to problems but we don't teach how to see them coming or work toward the solutionwhen they arise. It's like telling someone that a cabinet is made of wood and that it has four sides with a door in front then expecting them to know how to assemble and mount it.
This may seem an odd example but when my son was in Jr. High he was given a test. My son is close to genius where math is concerned. He made an F on the test. When he brought it home and I looked it over I saw that all his answers were correct. I visited the school to learn that he was suppose to use a calculator. He got the F because he worked it out in his head. It is fine to teach a child how to use the calculator but he also has to know how to work the problems out on his own.
Back in the day. People had to consider that facts, consiquenses and results of any action just to survive. In todays world so much is done for us or we are told simply that it is because that's how it is.
I am not sure I made sense there but I hope I got my opinion across ok.

Maybe it is because common sense doesn't really exist. It is just a term used in Philosophy that a lot of people now use.

Common Sense

does not mean that good sense which is common, or commonly needed in the ordinary affairs of life, but the sense which is common to all the five, or the point where the five senses meet, supposed to be the seat of the soul, where it judges what is presented by the senses, and decides the mode of action.

huh! you stole my question, people seem very self involved and common sense usually involves thinking of others. Why I am I the only one that pulls my shopping cart over so people can get by?!!! But if I go down an isle the people are in the middle of the isle they must know you're waiting to get by them but they won't budge with out you saying something to um!!!! GRR.

and instead of doing a dance with someone walking the oppisite way it's common sense to walk to the right!!!! Why don't people do it!

Great question! It's because most people base their "common sense" on what ever is loud and in-your-face in popular media. Which are usually the dumbest things to live by. I like to call it sophisticated bullsh*t, because a lot of time, this stuff people read or learn in popular media sounds like it makes sense on the surface, but when you really think for yourself about it, the hypocracy is obvious. But most tend to follow what they read, see and hear without question.

And popular medias ideas are only so common for a short time, then the next "IN" way of thinking comes in, and poeple changes their minds along with popular media and believe something else.

I'm thinking common sense is something we are born with. It is so important as we grow and mature. You can't teach it. It's kind of like the natural instinct a mother has for her new born child. It's like having wisdom. I don't care how many degree's you have, without common sense and wisdom, they have little value. I would like to share one of my favorite poems with you. I have it framed hanging on my wall.

Never mistake knowledge for wisdom.
One helps you make a living.
The other helps you make a life.
James Oppenheim

People specialize in being different or unique. Doing what someone else would do is so five minutes ago! Your grandma would have you Use your Noodle. But nobody does what grandma wants. I'm still trying to figure out this saggy pants issue!

Well, it used to be fairly common, that is why they named it that. But then a new generation came along and we need to find a new name.

I don't know but would like the answer, also.

I have read this signature tag line many times and I like it --
