Once in a while if the person seems upset or lonely.

No, I don't know why they are alone. Most of the time when I eat alone it's because I really want to be alone. People can be draining. The worst part is when I want to be alone and some random person tries to make conversation. I assume they mean well, but can't I just eat and be left alone, I am happy, and rested until a nosey person comes along. If I wanted company I wouldn't be alone in the first place!
Any way, thanks for letting me rant.

Usually it's men you see sitting alone. I've noticed that women tend to order food to go. Women are much more concious about being seen alone. Most of the guys are "working guys", probably too tired at the end of the day to care much.

sure... the thing is we all know what its like to feel lonely... at one time or another.. for various reasons ...at different points in life...I have sat alone in a dinner ... I have gone to a movie alone... and yes it does feel strange ....one time I went to a movie alone and turned to say something about the movie forgetting I was there alone... for a moment...lol.... but seeing others alone anywhere can make me feel sad.. an old person in a nursing home makes me sad...but if I get the opportunity I always smile and say hello to the people all alone..hoping that it makes their day just a little better...

No. When I get an urge to eat out and no one wants to go with me, I will go by myself. I love excellent food and people watching, so in spite of what people believe, sitting alone is not a bad thing.

Depends on how sad they look. I've seen normal looking people do it I've also seen 'cat lady' types do it. I think soem people are just happy to have a night out by themselves sometimes.
Not every person in the world likes company all the time.

It usually depends on the person's countenance however, elderly people alone tend to make me sad.
