Who keeps feeding you people the crap about dinosaurs!!!!
It comes from marine orginisms decomposing over time, while subjected to pressure. There is oil in rock fractures from the jurrassic period and other periods as well such as the devonian.

It is created when chemicals from decomposing things like dinosaurs combine. It takes millions of years and some specific criteria to happen thats why oil only shows up in certain areas. Though there is alot over the world some of it is in hard to get to places or unusable. That is one reason the worlds supply is limited especially at the pace it is being used.

Petroleum forms from the heat and pressure applied to ancient organic matter which was buried under ground. Sedimentary rocks that are rich in organic matter form when there is not enough oxygen to decay away all the organic matter before it is buried. In the ocean, the organic matter comes from the raining down of dead phytoplankton and zooplankton. On land, organic rich rocks form from vegetation in swamps. There is very little dinosaur remains in petroleum.
Over millions of years, the marine organic matter becomes kerogen, and the terrestrial organic matter usually becomes coal. If there is enough heat and pressure (eg. 4-6 km under ground), the kerogen will transform in to oil, or at higher heat and pressure, gas. Gas can also form from terrestrial organic matter.
As the oil and gas is light, it usually migrates up the pile of sediment, and eventually reaches the surface where it is 'eaten' by bacteria. But a small proportion gets trapped under ground by certain geological features, and is recovered by us.

Sorry not very good at that. But I DO know that the name petrolium comes from the Jordanian city Petra. It was originally called petra oil!

Yes, timeponderer knows exactly. He is good.
"A R" is a dumb cluck. Greek "petros" = rock, Latin "oleum" = oil, give us petroleum = rock oil. "Petra" = "rock city" because it was carved out of the rock.

It comes from the decomposition of animal and organic matter, but it takes millions of years.

It takes millions of years and "specific" conditions.
Just like it takes for Diamonds, Rubies, Gold, Fossils and anything of that sort of nature to form.
SPECIFIC CONDITIONS AND MILLIONS OF YEARS
