Astronomers are discovering that, contrary to many scifi stories, the universe is actually full of water and/or water ice. There are moons in our solar system that are covered with water (more ice than water). When such moons are impacted by killer asteroids and such, they are ripped apart, sending debris and water into space to become comets.

Our solar system is filled with small planetoids and asteroids. This indicates a lot of planets were destroyed and split into these bits and pieces. Some of those bits and pieces could very well contain water/ice if the original planet had it.

A little known fact is that Earth is bombarded with about 10,000 metric tons of matter from space every day. Some of that matter contains water. So Earth gets new water daily. [See source.]

Comet tails are not made of ice. There are two types of tails. One consists of dust and traces water vapour, the other (blue) one consists of ionised materials.

By the way the Hollywood image of gases "streaming back" from a comet are stupid and ridiculous. Sometimes the tail arrives BEFORE the comet depending on its position with regard to the sun

actually the comet is made of ice. as it approaches the sun it melts and particles are released. these make up the tail. there are many ice objects floating around in the universe.

fusion! water is dyhydrogen monoxide(h20) hydrogen is a proton, and oxygen is an element. the tail of a commet is actually made up of water, not ice. the commet is made up of ice and rock. the tail is the melted trail when the commet heads towards the sun. it probably came from a nebula, where stars and elements form. a nebula is basically an atmosphere in space.
