The Barnhart Dictionary of Etymology explains the origin of this practice thus:

"Modern and Middle English I developed from earlier i in the stressed position. I came to be written with a capital letter thereby making it a distinct word and avoiding misreading handwritten manuscripts. In the northern and midland dialects of England the capitalized form I appeared about 1250. In the south of England, where Old English ic early shifted in pronunciation to ich (by palatalization), the form I did not become established until the 1700's (although it appears sporadically before that time)."

I suspect the interjection "O" (as opposed to "oh"), as used when addressing someone ("O father!") or in exclamations like "O come with me!", is always capitalized for a similar reason.

Follwing is the rule of capitalization.

the first word of a sentence or fragment
the name of a day or a month
the name of a language
a word expressing a connection with a place
the name of a nationality or an ethnic group
a proper name
the name of a historical period
the name of a holiday
a significant religious term
the first word, and each significant word, of a title
the first word of a direct quotation which is a sentence
a brand name
a Roman numeral
the pronoun I

"I" therefore is allways capitalized.
