People had to invent words for things and used whatever came to mind.
Purple is just a name for a color (In English)
In French the same color is called Pourpre. Close but not identical.
In Spanish the same color is called Púrpura.
In German Purpurrot. Again close but not exactly the same.
Now look at Black:
In French - Noir
In Spanish - *****
In German - Schwartz
They are just names. When something new is invented a name has to be decided on.
In my grandparents lifetime there has been, automobile, airplane, telephone, television, rocket, computer, transistor, microwave, electric guitar, drive in restaurant, ATM, air conditioning, remote control, digital clocks, velcro, teflon.
That is just the few that come to mind at the moment and they are all just names that mankind has "invented" for the things in the world.

entomology can tell us what language a word comes from, and how the word evolved, but it isn't going to identify the guy who made up the word "purple." I'm afraid that kind of data is lost in shrouds of history.
You are welcome to call anything whatever you like (there's Glory for you!), but it might make communication difficult.
