I am hoping I can get some pointers on this. I am so eager to learn everything. I have so many interests. My problem is that when I read not only am I distracted, but I never remember what I read when I do comprehend it. I feel like one of lifes biggest gifts is taken from me because of this. Is there anyone who has had this problem, and found a solution. Is there some obvious answer that I am to stupid to see?
By the way I have been like this since about 4th grade. I am now 28.

The two problems are aspects of one process; you are distracted & the mind is unfocussed so nothing can be retained.

I had a similar problem & found meditation to be very helpful.
Also, focussing all of your attention on the immediate reality of NOW instead of letting it drift to the past or the future makes a BIG difference & was a large part of the side-effect benefit from meditation.

It probably doesn't matter what kind you do, so long as you find one you like & stick with it every day.

Good Luck!

I agree, you may have adult attention deficit disorder and may need an official diagnosis so you can get on some medication which may help you to concentrate when you read. As for remembering what you read, you may think you don't remember it but it is there in your subconscious waiting to be used. I have always thought I could memorize anything I read only long enough to pass a test and then promptly forget it but soon found out the information would become available when really needed. I have always had what I consider a reading disorder, also. I will fixate on a word, sentence or paragraph that for some reason I find attractive and will read it over and over until I realize what I am doing and force myself to stop. You are not stupid by any means. Your question was well written and easy to understand so you evidently were able to learn a great deal in school and from your reading. The distracted feeling you are bothered by could very well be treated so see a professional for diagnosis and treatment. Best of luck !

Try improving diet. Pesticides in foods cannot be good for memory so try to eat organic foods. All foods grown in Russia are organic. Lets make it law in USA so we don't have to eat pesticides. Run for congressperson and try to make this a law.See this page to see how big a difference that diet can make.

have you ever been tested for a.d.d. or for dyslexia or the like? It's a terribly grueling process but it might help you to see where your weaknesses are and to maybe even give them a name. And then have a path for dealing. . .

all my best to you with this. . .
