From the start of the film (In flashback) until he recalls the car crash, it's an implanted dream life he created after surviving the crash, but being unable to live with how disfigured he was. He chose to have his body frozen until such time his face could fully be restored and was given the option of this "dream Life" while he waited, but there was a glitch in the program that causes that dream to become a nightmare. Only his party, the car crash, going into frozen stasis and the very end where he has to "fall" in order to rejoin the human race after 150 years of being frozen were actual reality, all the rest of the film is the nightmare that was supposed to be a pleasant dream.

What's confusing? He got into a car wreck, messed up his face, and retreated into a fantasy life because of it. Since he is paying for the experience, he can semi-control the environment (the restaurant scene), and can choose to leave at any time. That's the plot in a nutshell, from a viewing about 4 years ago. Anything else?

David Aames, a tycoon's son who, in the eyes of many, is a spoiled child who has no realization of his wealth or luck. Inhereting his fathers company after both parents were killed in a road accident some years prior, David meets a girl whom his friend brings to a lavish house party one night and instantly falls in love with her. Desperate to find out more about this mystery girl, he gets chatting to her, unfortunately a jilted lover is watching David at all times and plans her final plot. After surviving a car crash and having his face reconstructed courtesy of his 'jilted lover', David struggles to find out the truth when his dreams turn into reality, and what he thinks is reality, turns into nightmares. He knows he wants the Mystery girl he met at the party that night, but where is she? who is she? Everything seems muddled slightly, until a doctor manages to repair his face, and life is back to the way it should be, together with his mystery girl, or is it? OMG i was just gonna ask the same question!! that was the WORST movie I have ever seen, i was sittin there sfter watchin the whole movie and thinkin 'what the hell was that about?' i asked my english teacher who was always talkin about analysing movies and there meaning etc. and he rented it that night...said he didnt have a clue either!!!
