I'll name my favorite books so you can get an idea of what I would like.
"Battlefied Earth" by L. Ron Hubbard.
"Wizard's First Rule" by Terry Goodkind.
"Sphere" by Michael Chricton.
"Eyes of the Dragon" by Steven King.
I love books that are thought provoking and make me look at something new or from a new angle. My problem with Scifi/fantasy right now is that most of them seem formulaic and don't provide anything new. What would you recomend to get me out of my slump?

If you have not read Neuromancer by William Gibson yet, I recommend it highly. Another book I like that's outside the mainstream is 'Malevil' by Robert Merle. It's about a small group surviving a nuclear exchange in a small castle in the Alps. It's more thoughtful than exciting (although it has it's moments), and it was interesting to me because it's told from a french perspective.Nanoo nanoo.

Robert Jordan's "Wheel of Time" series is good, however by the sixth book it starts getting monotonous with all of his descriptive text. The later books don't have as much "filler" and hold interest better. George R.R. Martin's "Fire and Ice" series is good. Terry Brooks' "Shanarra" series is also good. As far as thought provoking goes, Ray Bradbury and Isaac Asimov are two of the greatest sci-fi writers.

Read the DragonLance Novels. There's like thirty of them and they are all great! I've read and re-read the whole thing several times. They allow a different outlook on a great number of things. I hope you enjoy them!
