Someone suggested that i heat the needle first before sewing the buttons. This is to soften the rubber strap of the flip flop. But I don't really like the procedure because by doing so, the needle tends to be tainted with dark spots causing the flip flop to get dirty when buttons were sewn. Does anyone know of other way of doing this project? Thanks in advance.

It would be better to glue them using a silicone glue which will work well on both the plastic and the rubber. If you want them to LOOK sewn on,just sew a couple of stitches on the button itself before you glue it on.

Instead of heating the needle, if you know where you want to place the buttons, you an awl, or a small nail and hammer to make holes in the strap for your needle and thread to go through in order to sew the buttons on. You should be able to make holes in the strap using the same items that leather workers use to attach buttons to their items. Hope this helps.

i suggest you glue the buttons on the flip flops either with hot glue or super glue.

why don't you glue them on, or you can sew them around the rubber strap then glue the threads below the strap to it.
