Why try to make it yourself when you can buy perfectly good skimmer/pump combinations from aquarium suppliers. A JEBO 180 will do you and costs about US$40-$45. If you want to make your own, copy the best, Berlin. Check out Berlin skimmers on google.

Go to "About.com" and do a search for saltwater DIY projects. They have a lot of excellent info there and might be able to help you.
