How should I find out if he even has a girlfriend? I don't wan't to come on as the flirty type.

I think that you should just ask him if he has a girlfriend. Then give him your number, and see what happens. I wouldn't consider that being too 'flirty'.
I don't know what kind of store this guy works at, but I wish girls would just ask me themselves more. I'm a manager at a restaurant and I don't really have time to stop and chat with too many girls. It makes it easier when they just get to point and ask me stuff right away instead asking my employees. I am 90% more likely to stop what I am doing to talk with a girl that asks me for my number, or whatever, rather than play games with a girl that won't ask me herself.

Send him flowers - men love that sort of thing. I have been with my man almost 3 years and he is a customer service manager at Raley's - Bel air Supermarkets. I flirted a little at first to see how he responded and since I shopped at this store daily for several years I had made friends with a few employees so I asked them the scoop and turned out he was single. I sent him flowers/balloons for V day and we have been dating since. The flowers thing was a turn on for him - he thought it was very cool because nobody (love interest) had ever made that gesture before so it was a hit.

What 'type' do you want to come off as?
I'm sure he will be flattered even if he does have a girlfriend, just tell him you think he's nice and introduce yourself and see where the conversation goes from there.

Ask him to show you something in a far corner of the store, and then ask him a lot of questions. Smile a lot. Giggle. He'll get the message and ask for your number.

By the way he looks at you... looks says it all. obviously if he is interested in you he'd keep glancing at you and and will look for a way to approach you. if he talks to you, get to know him first, then later you can ask him whether he has a galfriend.
At the same time, why dont you follow your heart.. approach him first, then when you get to talk to him, ask him if he has a gal.

#3 go back and buy something else,
if he remembers your name, your in!
finally, just tell him that you would like to know him better
ask him to take you out, that is, if he's not involved with anyone
else. (take a shot of tequila to get brave, and a mint to not stink)
