Little Big Man. Altho the story involving Dustin Hoffman was fictional I believe, the facts about native/white affairs were entirely true. I got interested in quite a lot of history after I watched that film, I even lived near Sand Creek for awhile, the scene of a terrible massacre portrayed in the movie. I don't know that Little Big Man is popular but it should be, it was done so well and even has a sense of humor to it.
I thought a minute longer and decided to add M*A*S*H for obvious reasons. I just rewatched it and it stands the teast of time to me, sarcastically funny and made so well, outstanding cast and writing.
