In a conversation with a freind, he told me that he thinks religion is a cultural relic that will eventually become obsolete in favor of ever-advancing science. I thought it was an interesting perspective and I want to know what you think?

I think it'll become CLOSE to obsolete....religion traditionally filled in all the gaps that science couldn't. For instance, God was attributed to natural disasters such as floods, tsunamis, earthquakes and the like--as his wrath--we were being "punished". We can now explain these things in a scientific manner. As science advances, the less religion is needed. I doubt science will ever have ALL the answers. Really good question!

The best definition of religion I've heard is "taking care of the widows and orphans" which is reported to be from a guy called Apostle Paul. Organized religions as they exist today will eventually cease to exist because they are false. It is inevitable that only the truth will eventually remain. There is truth in loving each other. That will hopefully be the surviving "religion". Note we don't need any churches or leaders to teach us how to love. Science has limitations. While it is a certain way to truth when correctly applied, it can only answer what can be proven to another. The spiritual aspect of us is real and true, so science can never entirely replace religion.

I don't think so. From time immemorial, mankind has always thought about something greater than himself, greater than this world, greater than the universe. I don't think there is a culture that did not have some idea of something greater than man.

Organized religion is something else again. Will we still worship in a church? Will there be a clerical hierarchy?
These constructs can become obsolete since many of them are a product of culture. (Although mankind seems to never learn from past experience so there's that to consider as well.)

However, I think mankind will still long to reach for and unite with something in the cosmos greater than us - call it the world soul or the eternal light or God - I think that desire is universal and that part of religion will not die. After all, it's what religions try to do -- connect you to the spirit of the universe, no matter what you care to name it. Most people today would call it God.

First of all I want to clarify that religion and organized religion are not the same. Religion is the process of our Mind or our Self to discover the false as false, a negative approach to uncover the Truth. Organizations are groups that are nailing the unlimited Truth to a limited frame. I think the organizations of religion are the one obsolete, not religion. Religion is not organization, a religious individual is free from all prisons of ignorance or illusions. Religion has no boundary and science is a speck of dust compared to religion.

Age after age their tragic empires rise....

The answers indicating the imminent demise of religion could have been spoken in 1800, 1500 or 1100. Every age of man thinks he has figured out all the secrets of God's universe.

Spirituality is NOT religion. It is an attempt to mold God into our image.

Religion could become obsolete and probably should. We no longer need heads of religions to control our lives.

As Spiritual beings, however, we will always be connected to our higher selves.

Churches in themselves serve a good purpose within our family and social structures for fellowship and rituals

Science hasn't been as successful in rallying people into a common interest and build community, I think that is a positive point.
The supernatural aspects, eh, not so much.

Never.

Even when the anti-Christ rises up, he would put himself equal to God and command all people to worship him. Religion will NEVER be obsolete.

There is a hole in the heart of people that only God can fill.
