There is no real answer to this question but what I have learned of what love is to me and that is the word LOVE itself holds the answer.......

(L)isten: and validate them by hearing and empathizing.
(O)verlook: their minor character flaws as they will overlook yours.
(V)alue: who they are and what they mean to you.
(E)xpress: how you love them not just with words but with actions.

Love is a condition or phenomenon of emotional primacy, or absolute value. Love generally includes an emotion of intense attraction to either another person, a place, or thing; and may also include the aspect of caring for or finding identification with those objects, including self-love. Love can describe an intense feeling of affection, an emotion or an emotional state. In ordinary use, it usually refers to interpersonal love, an experience usually felt by a person for another person. Love is commonly considered impossible to define.

The concept of love, however, is subject to debate. Some deny the existence of love. Others call it a recently invented abstraction, sometimes dating the "invention" to courtly Europe during or after the middle ages (though this is contradicted by the sizable body of ancient love poetry). Others maintain that love really exists, is not an abstraction, but is indefinable; being a quantity which is spiritual, metaphysical, or philosophical in nature. Some psychologists maintain that love is the action of lending one's "boundary" or "self esteem" to another. And others attempt to define love and apply the definition to everyday life.

I guess it starts with a physical attraction, however it is much more than that. It is best friends, shared interests. Same values, same sense of humour. similar needs. And at the same time having the ability to be your own person while still respecting that you are two separate people and one couple simultaneously. As well as that it is just plain hard work for life.

According to me,Love is best seen as devotion and action, not an emotion. Love is not exclusively based on how we feel. Certainly our emotions are involved, but they cannot be our only criteria for love. True devotion will always lead to action - true love...And I also think that those who love their parents then anybody else in the world will know what is true love...

Love is patient, love is kind and is not jealous, Love does not brag and is not arrogant, does not act unbecomingly; it does not seek to own, is not provoked, does not take into account a wrong suffered, does not rejoice in unrighteousness, but rejoices in truth, bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things, Love never fails....

This is the ultimate definition of love... it's old and from the bible... :)

As I hung there on the cross and writhed in pain,
I looked out at the angels weeping on the plain.

I remembered Heaven where they chorused songs of glee,
as all of Heaven worshipped, adored, and cherished me.

I remembered why I left my home of peace and bliss,
and suffered life on earth for such a time as this.

I longed to have you with me, and by my very side.
As a cherished treasure, my spotless shining bride.

Yes I left Heaven's grandure and its warmth of love.
To share it all again with you and my Father up above.

I could not leave you orphans, crying in the dirt.
So I left heaven's glory to weep and bleed and hurt.

And soon it will be finished, my sorrow here on earth,
and you will be my treasure, my pearl of greatest worth.

I will hold you to me, in Heaven up above.
And you will know the meaning of true love.

Love is when the person you love knows the worst thing about you and it's ok...and vice versa.
