i've always wondered this.

there are so many cars... are all car keys different???? would a 1998 toyota camery have the same key as another one??? how do they make so many keys?

It is possible to find one key that will fit two cars.If one type of key can be cut 100,000 different ways, but there are 200,000 cars that take the same key blank, then you'll get repetition. Adding a "chip" like GM did, greatly decreases the possibility of any two cars sharing the same key. Of course, if you drive a low production vehicle...Mercedes, BMW, Land Rover, each vehicle will probably have a unique key code. Keep in mind, also, that some keys are single sided (single cut), and some are double sided (double cut), some are cylindrical, and some newer ones are electronic.

No each key is carved differently. If you go to a hardware store they have keys that haven't been cut. You have to get the key cut in order for it to fit your car. So you give the guy at the hardware store your key, and he will take a blank from the shelf and start cutting the blank key so that it will match your key.

Keys are reused, so it is possible that two (or more) 1998 camry's have the same exact key. Different between most carmakers, though.
