I think Will Smith is very multi-talented. He is a great actor. I believe that bringing up any truth from our past histories that will enlighten all of us in the present can only be a good thing.
P.S. I am a Northern European American.

I'll be honest, I hadn't heard about this either. As for Will Smith I think he's a good actor, great in action/comedy roles and darn handsome besides. Jada is one lucky girl! His politics and philosophies I don't know or care.
As for the issue you are raising, I think you are generalizing the response of caucasian people. I think the past needs to be recognized in order to respond to it. However, if my ancesters mistreated people because of their race (and I don't think mine in particular did, but even IF they did...) it has nothing to do with anything I'm doing now. I take people on an individual basis. I don't assume that because you are of a certain race or creed that you are a bad or a good person or that I'll like or dislike you. I believe all should be treated with respect regardless. How can you condemn me for something before you ever meet me? How could I do that to you?
What aggravates me is people who abuse the fact that wrongs were commited in the past in order to further their own cause in present times, people who want to rub it in others' faces and ask for special priveleges because their grandfather had it tough. I'm SORRY that African Americans (or Native Americans or Asian Americans or Latino Americans or anyone else I've missed) have been mistreated. It wasn't right, but I didn't do it! So why should I lose out on a job or a tax break or on being able to voice my own opinion because of what someone else did who just happens to have the same skin color I have???? Isn't that the same thing you are accusing me of?

I dislike him for the same reason I dislike Adam Sandler and Will Ferrell. I don't show preference here. Obnoxious, untalented people are just that, whether they are African, European or Asian. Some Europeans pretend to love Will just so that no one will call them racists . Well, I don't worry about such nonsense. My #1 gal is from Japan, so anyone who says I'm a racist has nothing to support it. My surname is French, but Mom is Dutch and had two Cherokee grandmothers. I am somewhat Eurasian. You sound like a racist. If anyone brings up the past, mention what was done to my Native American ancestors. Africans were valuable property, so only fools would be too rough on them, but the Europeans wanted the land and exterminated many Native Americans. I don't bring up the past, and no one has the right to do so. I had no slaves, and I take no responsibility for anyone but myself. If my father and my brother had slaves, that isn't me, let alone people who lived before the Civil War. You should admit that many Africans do bring up slavery to "get a free ride". I don't watch Will Smith, Adam Sandler, Will Ferrell or Billy Bob Thornton, so I don't know what they do, and I don't want to know.

I am a "white person" but I only speak for myself. I think we should learn from the past, so we can do better in the future, and never forget, but forgive and move on, in all aspects of our lives. I don't believe we should use the past for an excuse for anything and I don't think that Will Smith is doing that. I don't feel any different about him than I did before. I think he is a great role model for African Americans as well as the rest of us on the planet. From what I know, I find him to be a talented actor,a good husband and father, and I think he represents himself well. Generalizations about any race is not a good thing, we will never get past anything if we continue to judge a race by what a select few do, say or believe.

no i do not hate him i did not know he did that but ok. NE way i dont think that is necceslery a bab thing bc children who are growing up now do not know about it so why not teach them but i do think that they should know that it is not like that now and be appreciative of what their ancesters went through so they could go to school and that they are able to have freedom and just be thankful and be the best that they can be and do not blame the white people that are living in todays world for the past I talk about what happen to my ancestor they were jewish so they were in the hallacost. And my dads side was in the cole minds and got treated very badly while working in there. I do teach that but i just tell my kids you got it good now. So do your best in life.

Yeah - he's talented and funny. Wish I were more like him. Yes I'm white and sunburn easily. Regarding bringing up slavery - I really hope the National Slavery Museum being promoted by Bill Cosby becomes reality. Seems weird that there's a Jewish Holocost museum right in Washinton DC when we have not long before established a memorial and museum for America's own holocost - slavery.

Well,I'm white, and I've always loved Will Smith,he has something special, and I saw that about him when he first started out.
and this thing of Blacks hating Whites, and Whites hating Blacks,it's really getting old,as if there not enough HATE in this world right now,and people seem to be getting worse instead of better,no one,NO ONE.....knows what a person is going to do from one minute to the next ,whether they are going to pat you on the back or but a knife or bullet in it.. It's getting scary out there and we need to get ourselves in check,if we can't protect and defend each other, how in the world if we are invaded from another country are we going to survive,if they hate us ,we hate us ,we hate them,HATE,HATE,HATE....I'M SO SICK OF IT....PEOPLE CAN CHANGE THERE FEELING IF THEY WANT TO,it's just people just don't care anymore,if people's ,family, friends, will kill you or you and your kids and cut your unborn baby out of your stomach,,baby's being kidnapped, older children and adults being snatched right off the street in front of people,in day light,we have no hope...none.....we have got to stop this......I was 8 years old when Martin Luther King was killed,I'll never forget it,even at that age I knew who and what we had lost ,I cried for days and it some how changed me,I don't see color,i see action, attitudes, that's what I look at.,not something none of us can help or change, our color!!!!

I like Will Smith.
I don't think the blacks bringing up their past is wrong. i think it's similar to Jews talking about the holocaust, it is important and it's lessons must be remembered so they are not repeated. It's the same sort of thing.
The only thing wrong would be using the past as an excuse to not do your best.

Maybe he was already hated before he made the show. Also, maybe they want blacks to move on. White people did. And they'll help blacks also once they get over the past.
