Perception and discernment are co-related, but not the same.

The discernment between "self" and "non-self" sets up a single boundary. The non-self may be discerned into "things" using perception. The self is not directly perceived and cannot be discerned or distinguished.

I'll take a shot. These 2 statements are describing copies of an original. In #1 it's talking about an upgraded or original copy. #2 is talking about exact copies.

From a zen point of view the original self is a new born spirit. No preconceived notions, no anger, no hate, no joy. As time marches on you change. Your experiences might cause you to become bitter, or benevolent, distiguishable from the original self. However if you had been locked inside a closet and fed and cared for your spirit or self would be indistinguishable from your original self.
