Several.

Proteins are part of the cellular membranes and other physical structures, muscle tissue, enzymes to make energy, hormones for organs to communicate with each other. The list goes on.

There are many different types of proteins, so your question is a little vague. Some proteins act as structural components, both in the membrane of the cell and in the cell's internal cytoskeleton. Other proteins are enzymes which catalyze various chemical reactions. These proteins are important for cellular respiration and many other chemical pathways. Then you have other proteins which serve as chemical signals. One example of this is the hormone epinephrine (commonly known as adrenaline). This protein interacts with cellular surface receptors (which are themselves proteins). Proteins are made up of chemical units called amino acids. These are nitrogenous compounds that literally constitute some of the building blocks of life.
