They had lots of nuclear missiles too. It was called something like mutually assured destruction.
You should review the Cuban Missile Crisis with President Kennedy to see how very close the world was to an exchange of nuclear missiles.
Please don't forget that apparently neither nation felt the need to launch a first strike during the Cold War.

We never really wanted to bomb the Soviet Union. We just wanted to make sure if they launched an attack on us that we could retaliate. Even though both sides took it too far. I mean, we didn't need thousands of warheads to wipe them off the map. It would have only taken a few hundred. I think the whole "cold war" was just basically the US and USSR standing at the urinals trying to see who had the biggest one. Think about it, Freud would have had a field-day with our leaders at the time. On one side, we've got the US trying to make sure they have more warheads than the USSR. On the other side you have the USSR, not with as many warheads, but the one's they do have are ten times more powerful. It's classic, one side says "I have more," the other says, "Yeah, well mine are bigger than yours."
It was MAD, mutually assured destruction. That is an International Relations theory that played a big part in the cold war. It is based on the fact that if two or more powers have enough weapons to wipeout the other that neither will attack because it would be suicide.

It was a mythological policy called MAD. Mutually assured destruction. If we hit them they his us. Plus, why did we need to bomb them? Just because you have a bomb it does not mean you need to use it. We proved that , as they did.
