Hello, everyone. I am a nanny for twin baby boys. They are almost eight months old and can sit up unassisted for roughly an hour and stand with help for 15 or so minutes. However, when they lay on their stomachs they can come up to the position of crawling, but they don't go anywhere. They can scoot backwards and roll around indefinitely. How can I help them begin to crawl? Thank you!

Just so ya'all know, I'm not worried about them...they're obviously very sharp. I asked because I was curious if I could be more proactive about this.

I will say that please don't worry because everone meets there milestones at different times.
As per doctors, since the "put the baby on their backs to sleep" became the norm, the crawling stage is skipped by more babies." doctor says its perfectly fine that a baby is not crawling and that he/she may just skip it all together.

8 months isn't that bad for not being able to crawl. My son didn't actually start crawling where he was getting anywhere until about 9-10 months. He did the backwards thing for about 2 weeks and then he figured out how to crawl forward. (now there is no stopping him) You could try putting something in front of them like a toy so that they try and get to it. Are their parents trying to teach them as well?

That is something they are going to have to learn on there own. My son started crawling the day he turned 9 months. Were they born early by any chance? If they were then they're gestional age and current age are probably different. It more then likely wont be to long before they go forward though b/c you said they are going backwards already and most babies do that first.

some babies don't crawl and its perfectly normal. all babies are unique and have their own phase of learning new things. Some babies go straight to learning how to walk. Just let them learn at their own rate but if you insist on teaching them how to crawl you ca by crawling yourself. Show them how to and induce them to do the same. Put things that will interest them in front of them just little out of reach. If they were able to crawl to it put the thing a little farther and so forth.
Babies are a bundle of joy. Have fun and god bless.

I don't think there is anything you can do to make them crawl, and actually some babies go right to walking without crawling. It sounds like they are developing just fine. Enjoy the time they aren't crawling, because soon you'll be wishing they'd stay still! lol

Do they have those "Boppy" pillows? Those are used for this purpose. With the boppy facing forward, place the baby with his stomach down on the largest part of the pillow. facing the baby, call to him, talk to him, etc. and encourage movement. place them on a soft surface and guide them. Crawling should come naturally, everything will be fine. Good luck and god bless.

Well, this may not be the answer you want but I really don't think you can do anything to speed this up. They will crawl and probably very soon or they may just go straight to walking. But the best thing you can do is not to stress over this and just enjoy the whole time!

you can get them in crawling position and place something at their feet (like the palm of the hand) for them to push off of.
Also, you can lay their stomach on their leg and put them into crawling posiiton, this takes some of the weight off their arms and knees so they can feel more comfortable and move around.

Show them you do it in front of them or maybe get a toy that moves to make them want to crawl after it. I think they make an Elmo that crawls or i know a toy that crawls that you can buy.
Well hope that helps

my daughter was born at 27weeks, so she was very behind... but the one thing that helped was getting down and crawling with her, one limb at a time. I'd move my arm, move her arm, move my leg, move her leg etc...etc... push her little legs up so she was on her knees and id crawl around my front room like a fool showing her how it was done. she did scoot backwards and roll to get where she was going until she was about 8months, so i wouldn't worry.
